April Showers bring May Flowers

Last week Taylor and I headed off to Miami for the Monsters of Rock Cruise. I was on edge, exhausted from recording the new Kill Ritual album and working the day job. For the majority of the last 3 months I was getting up between 5:30am – 6am, going to work, coming home, firing up pro-tools and writing songs. I was going to bed late and getting little rest. Needless to say, I needed a break… so this cruise was going to give me some down time, some much needed down time.

Let me backtrack a little…..

It’s 2009 and I’ve just been laid off from Crispin, Porter & Bogusky. With severance package in hand I decided to go full on into my music. Between 2009-2010 I had done 35 recordings with different bands, musicians, etc. I was on a roll. One of those bands had me fly to NYC to record in the famous Green Street Studios which used to be located in Soho and then relocated to the New York Suburbs. During that time my sister Darlene was sick. We didn’t think much of it though, she had been in and out of hospitals because of her Sjogrens Syndrome. I drove up to Connecticut in between recordings just to check in on her. She was in pretty rough shape. She had lost a lot of weight and her body was very frail. It was tough to see but never did I think she would ever die from it. She said something to me that changed my life. I’m paraphrasing here because, as I stated, I didn’t think much of it at the time. She was a very positive person and I knew that she would be ok, or so I thought.

She said to me, “David… if I die promise me that you will continue to sing. That is your gift and the most important thing to share with the world.”

When she passed, and I lost my job, nothing would stop me from my dream. Nothing. Darlene passed on April 5, 2010.

Fast forward to now…

I wrote a resignation letter to Hakkasan yesterday. I realized that I was not in alignment with my vision and was falling back into the same trap that I had fallen into while working at Crispin. The music was becoming secondary and harder to focus on. I found myself buying things that I didn’t need. Taylor calls it ‘Retail Therapy’. She’s right. So now, yet again, I take the plunge. The F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real) behind me and a whole new world of infinite possibilities ahead of me. The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades… or something like that. 🙂

What’s next?

As I stated above… infinite possibilities. I have my freelance design, my Reiki Practice and my music all well underway. I look forward to creating and serving because this is who I am. I hope that I can help you do the same.

If you would like to contact me for Life Coaching, Reiki, Design or even a few music projects, please do. I am here and available.

Namaste,

David

Happy Easter

Today I went to church… within myself.

Today I woke up and thanked the Universe for the life that I have, the love I have, for the friends that I have, for the new adventures coming and the lessons of the past.

Today I am grateful to be who I am. To love myself. To accept myself for who I am, who I’ve been and who I am becoming. I know that today I am who I am because of what I’ve done. My failures, my accomplishments, my disappointments, my embarrassments.

Today I surround myself with people I aspire to be. And those that I don’t aspire to be… know that they are on their own journey.

Today I remind myself that I was once where they were (and still might be at times… hehe). There is no finish line. The only goal is to ‘be’. We are all works in progress. If we think that we aren’t and that we’ve ‘made it’ then, my friend, you probably have more work than all of us.

Today I am Humble.

Recognize that we are all mirrors. That if we want Love we need to give love. If we want respect, we need to give respect. If we want Joy we need to be Joyous. Don’t wait for it to come. It won’t. Give to receive. And most of all… when receiving, do it with appreciation, not expectation.

Love and Light on this Easter Day, and may every day be Easter.

Peace,
David

Kill Ritual Recording Update

Well… I have to tell you. Adding one piece of equipment to my recording rig can make all of the difference in the world!

When I started the recording process with Steven a few weeks ago he suggested that I get a DBX 286s Mic Preamp/Processor to mimic what he has in his studio up in San Francisco, so I did. I can not believe the difference. It’s taken the recording process to a whole new level. Last night Taylor had to stop from recording to eat. I had been going 3 hours! It felt like 20 minutes.

Here’s a rundown on the rig.

For you recording geeks; Macbook Pro 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8GB of ram (I’d love to up the ram but its a Retina model), M-Audio Mobile Pre running Pro Tools 10, the above mentioned DBX Unit, two different Microphones… for the Kill Ritual recordings I’m using a Rode NT-1. I just added a sweet set of Sennheiser HD 598 headphones running through a PreSonus HP4 Headphone monitor. This rig isn’t the biggest, nor the best, but it does get me some really clean vocals to hand off to a bigger studio for mixing and mastering. Other equipment that I have but not necessarily in use for these recordings are; a Blue Bluebird Microphone, a Lexicon MX200 Reverb Unit, and a Mackie 1402 VLX Pro mixing board.

About the Kill Ritual recordings.

I’ve got 3 songs down out of 11 so far. Mastering has been set for May with Sonic Train Studios. Steven and I will be flying back and forth every once in a while just so we’re getting some face to face time. This has been some of the smoothest recordings I’ve even done. It’s not just the new rig set up, but the interaction with someone that I can relate with. We both enjoy this process of writing and recording and we look at the final outcome, all ego’s aside. It’s not about us. As it should never be.

The lyrical content I think you will find up to par with other lyrics I’ve written in the past. Although personal (I’ve never been able to write 3rd party), they are open enough to interpretation to anybody. I can’t wait for you to hear this album. It’s going to be epic!!!

The Press

Looking through all of the hype for the new album has been pretty mind blowing. Bravewords, MetalHammer, Metal Underground, Metal Italia, Stormbringer, and the list goes on. Thank you everyone that has taken an interest in this. It’s given me encouragement to write even better!

Below are some links for you to check out…..

David
